Dutch Oven Baked Beans

Cooking in the dutch oven is something that has been Grandma and Grandpa’s job. Recently we decided to let our Little Chefs help in the process. Today we are sharing Dutch Oven Baked Beans. We were all at their cabin for the weekend and let the Little Chefs each take a turn contributing to the entire menu. It was much easier having one Little Chef help at a time instead of all the Little Chefs in the kitchen doing their task all at the same time. I call this controlled chaos! Or…semi controlled chaos!

When cooking with Dutch Ovens it is important to have all your prep work done before you start assembling anything. Little Chef A chopped the onions. Afterward Little Chef C chopped the sausage.

In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, ketchup, salt and pepper, worcestershire sauce.

By now the coals are ready and constant adult supervision is in place. We did not allow the Little Chefs to move the coals, just pour and stir within the dutch oven. Remember when we posted the Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler recipe we talked about these great Disposable Foil Dutch Oven Liners.

The bacon was rendered and onions sauteed in large dutch oven by Little Chef B. Then, Little Chef E added the hamburger to brown. Afterward he added the sausage and onions. Drain the grease next. We have found the easiest way to drain grease by our Little Chefs is to take a couple paper towels and fold them twice or whatever size you desire. Using tongs pick up the paper towel stack and place it in the grease and allow the paper towel to absorb the grease. No accidental spilling of the hot grease!

I am a mom to Five Little Chefs who love to cook and create anything with their hands. Watching over 10 additional hands keeps me busy but is so much fun! We laugh and cry everyday, but then want to do it again the next day. That is how we know we are enjoying life!
