Martha Stewart Cooking School

We started in 2011 with the goal to cook recipes we found from chefs we liked. In 2012 we did some cooking and some crafting. I was always looking for some guideline to teach my Little Chefs the basics. One day I was flipping through the tv guide and discovered the Martha Stewart Cooking School episodes on PBS. I loved watching each episode because it was the basics of cooking. I have never learned the basics so it kept my attention and I enjoyed learning so many new things. I was excited to share the episodes with my Little Chefs so I DVR’d them. (Is that a word?) A little while later my mom showed me a cookbook she recently purchased which happened to be the Martha Stewart Cooking School Cookbook. I had no idea there was a book that went along with the episodes.

I started looking through the book and found some really great things to pass along to my Little Chefs. That got me thinking…what if I taught my Little Chefs what I was learning from the book but at their level and understanding. The more I thought about it the more I thought it was something we could do. Some lessons will be short explanations which would then be reinforced by activities such as matching games or pairing a picture with the description, and more!  Of course there is cooking involved, but learning the how to’s and the why’s comes first. I will be referencing parts of the book while not repeating what is learned but supplementing with learning activities.

I still believe kids can learn to cook. My Little Chefs have come so far! I feel adding the basics to their learning will help us move forward in our journey together. Wish us luck! Better yet, join in the fun!

Our schedule for the year will be:

  • Monday – Cooking School
  • Tuesday – Children’s Book about food with an activity or recipe
  • Wednesday – Cooking School
  • Thursday – Fantastic Thursday Linky Party
  • Friday – Cooking School

I am a mom to Five Little Chefs who love to cook and create anything with their hands. Watching over 10 additional hands keeps me busy but is so much fun! We laugh and cry everyday, but then want to do it again the next day. That is how we know we are enjoying life!
