Review: Easy Bake Stylin’ Sweets Cake Kit

My Little Chefs received an Easy Bake Stylin' Sweet Cake Kit as a gift from my Brothers family. From the outside it looks like a lot of fun! The packaging is pink, just the right color pink to attract any little girl. Upon opening there are a lot of parts but after consulting the manual we were able to easily figure out which part does what. I read the instructions to the Little Chefs and explained the steps we were going to follow. The manual advises to tape down wax paper and only bake/d...

That is a pineapple….or is it a mango?

Five Little Chefs - That is a pineapple....or is it a mango?  How many times have you or your kids misidentified fruits or vegetables? Mine do it quite frequently.  The first recipe Little Chef C made was Chef Robert's Seared Mahi Mahi with Mango Sauce.  In referencing this recipe later she said she wanted to "make the fish with the pineapple sauce." After some thought I realized she was mistaking the mango for the pineapple. Why would she get the two mixed up? They seem so different to me. ...

Color Me Rad 5K Race – Utah

Have you ever heard of Color Me Rad? Until signing up for the Breathing Space Blogger Retreat I was not familiar with it. Take a look at the pictures! It looks like a big party right! We are not a running family, but we have been trying to get out and run/walk in preparation for fun summer hiking and activities. We will be participating for fun, not to win. My Little Chefs are so excited to look "like easter eggs"! (Easter is still on their minds!) Kids 7 and under run for free! I am buying ...

Breathing Space – A Blogger Retreat

I am SO excited to attend Breathing Space a blogger retreat in Daybreak, Utah on May 4-5, 2012. I stumbled onto a post about this conference a couple weeks ago. I thought it would be good to meet other bloggers, especially because I'm new to this whole blogging world! My next thought was would it be fun going alone, not knowing anyone? After some more research and contemplation I decided to jump in and do something way out of my comfort zone and go. They said I would be provided with my new ...

Easter Turkey

We pulled out the turkey from the refrigerator and cut open the bag. Little Chef A patted the turkey dry on both sides and placed it in the roasting pan. Little Chef C cut the orange and onion in 8ths. She did it the night before so she knew exactly how to do it, just one additional cut. She also cut the celery and the carrot in one inch pieces. Little Chef a covered the outside of the turkey with pats of butter. She was ok getting her hands all greasy this time and did not complain...

Little Chef Musings

Our Chicken Fajitas were featured at 30 Handmade Days! Thanks so much! My Little Chefs are starting to sound like they are experts. Some are more daring then others to voice their opinion. Some ask more questions then others. Most of those conversations occur while we are cooking. Some occur when we watch Food Network or when someone else is making the meal. Most of the time I laugh and they are not sure what to say to that. They do not know what is so funny. Tonight Little Chef Dad was ...

Little Chefs Cook Better Then Big Chefs!

Our theme is Little Chefs CAN cook! Well...sometimes Little Chefs can cook better then Big Chefs. The other day we were busy with Little Chef extracurricular activities. Little Chef Dad was in charge of dinner. He chose Browned Butter Mizithra and Popovers. Seems pretty simple, but the popovers take time to cook. We came back from our activities ready to eat.  Little Chef Dad decided NOT to follow the recipe and use up the rest of the Mizithra because "there is no such thing as too much ...

Citrus-Braised Chicken Breast with Sweet Roasted Garlic

Five Little Chefs - Citrus-Braised Chicken Breast with Sweet Roasted Garlic   It was Little Chef C's turn to cook a Chef Robert recipe from his cookbook, Impossible to Easy. She chose Citrus-Braised Chicken Breast with Sweet Roasted Garlic. The first step was to cut the root end off of the garlic head. Which is the root end? We thought we were right. We thought it was the end with all the little hairs on it. It was VERY hard for Little Chef C to cut through. She wanted me to finish and I ...

Dessert Quesadilla

Five Little Chefs - Dessert Quesadilla   Little Chef D was excited to make HER recipe today. Recently we were shopping and saw Paula Deen's aprons. Little Chef A said, this is YOUR chef look!  This Dessert Quesadilla looked so good on the Food Network site we just had to make it. Little Chef D cut the banana with a butter knife. That is the safest for her to use and it was fine because bananas are so soft. I showed her what size to cut them and instructed her to cut them thin, ...

Product Review: Curious Chef Knives

Five Little Chefs - A review of Curious Chef Knives    Curious Chef is a company that has products for kids in the kitchen. I was looking for something that my Little Chefs could use without me wincing each time they cut! There were mixed reviews for these knives, but I decided to go for it anyway. When we first received the package my Little Chefs were so excited to "have a knife of their own." They wanted to make a recipe everyday where they had to cut something. We have been using them ...

Product Review: Curious Chef Oven Mitts

Five Little Chefs - Curious Chef Oven Mitt Review We were not too far into this experiment when I realized my Little Chefs were not able to take pans in and out of the oven safely because they did not have oven mitts that fit. Sure they could use the adult sized ones, but their little hands were swimming in the mitts. Because of this, they did not feel comfortable pulling anything out of the oven alone. They did not have a good enough grasp of the pan.  If they were not confident in ...

Product Review: Vidalia Chopper

Five Little Chefs - Vidalia Chopper Review In our qwest to find tools to help children cook we found the Vidiala Chop Wizard while shopping. I recall seeing it advertised on television. At the time I thought it would be nice to chop vegetables and fruits quickly, but wondered if it was made well enough. When I saw it in the store we had tried different cutting methods and a designated children's knife. They were still having problems cutting well, especially for my younger Little Chefs. I ...

Nutella Brownies

Five Little Chefs - Nutella Brownies Little Chef D was so excited to make the second Nutella recipe. This one is called Nutella Brownies from Two Peas and their Pod.  The recipe called for bittersweet chocolate, but since we had to make something NOW we used what we had, mini semisweet chips.   Little Chef D combined the dry ingredients, sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, cocoa, and the chips.  She now knows everything need to be leveled out. She asked, "scrape it ...

Why Five Little Chefs?

For over a year now I have realized my Little Chefs love to help in the kitchen. They love to watch cooking shows and they are starting to develop their senses for food. I love when my oldest Little Chef walks in the door and says "I smell....." Amazingly she is usually correct! I am frequently asked "Can I help?" Yes, I have concluded that when they help measurements are not always exact therefore the food doesn't always turn out like the picture, the kitchen becomes a HUGE mess, funny ...
