General Conference Packet Updates

As you may know in October 2015 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints sustained 3 new apostles to the Quarem of the Twelve Apostles. I previously created a get to know the LDS Apostles. Now that it is outdated I had some work to do. These new 3 apostles have been so hard to search for and find fun facts. If you know of any other fun facts that would be great for this activity please let me know. Make sure you go back to the main Get To Know The LDS Apostles link.  (for ease I ...

Candy and Ice Experiment

One thing I want to instill upon my children is that there are many people in this world besides them. When we only think about ourselves we are not aware of the ways we can help others. I seem to be teaching this to my kids over and over again. It does become redundant unless I find a new analogy to use to make it seem like a new and exciting concept. I recently ran across a snippet of the candy and experiment. I took the idea and ran with it. Candy and Ice Experiment Supplies ...

Grow Your Own Stalactites and Stalagmites

We recently went on vacation to Carlsbad Canyons in New Mexico. My kids loved seeing so many stalactites and stalagmites. Through the Junior Ranger Program they learned the difference between the two. Stalactites hold tight to the ceiling while stalagmites might reach the ceiling. This science experiment is fun to watch each day as the crystals grow a little more and a little more. Grow Your Own Stalactites and Stalagmites Supplies Needed:  2 glass jars spoon shallow dish or ...

After completing the program we get to choose a book and get a pass to the Museum of Natural History. Toddlers through adults may participate. Barnes and Noble- 2015 theme is Imaginat...

Jump Rope Songs Part 2

After printing and putting together a photo book with jump rope songs my girls had some words for me. They did not like some of the versions of the songs and they informed me of other jump rope games they play. I decided to take their suggestions and create part 2 of the jump rope songs. My girls like this version of Ice Cream Soda better. They say it is an updated version. Wow, now I really feel old. School  - this game is played one at a time until a mistake is made. Not only ...

Jump Rope Songs

There are so many fun memories I have from my childhood. Jumping rope, singing songs on the playground at school and playing hopscotch were two of my favorite things. I want to share these songs with my kids through these Jump Rope Songs {Printables}. This time instead of creating easy crafts I made the printable simple to send to one hour photo and let them do the work. Check here for even more jump rope songs and activities that I later created because this one was so popular. There are so ...

What is Active Learning?

I have been practicing active learning with my Haley because I'm teaching her colors and numbers. I have never stopped to explain what is active learning. You will soon discover it is terminology you may not be familiar with, but you are most likely already involved in active learning. Active learning by definition is "a process whereby students engage in activities, such as reading, writing, discussion, or problem solving that promote analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of class ...

Teach Your Child Your Phone Number FAST!

All kids need to know their telephone number. You never know when they will need it. Hopefully never in an emergency, but in case they do you want them to be prepared. Active learning simply put is learning that has some action attached to it. Attaching a song to what needs to be memorized is active learning. To teach your child your phone number through music helps them learn it fast! Teach Your Child Your Phone Number FAST! When I taught my first kids their phone number we didn't use ...

Colors – Free Ipad Apps for Active Learning

We have been working on colors in some fun ways incorporating active learning. Ipads are a great way to learn colors. There are many free ipad apps available. These are 4 we have found enjoyable. We all learn in different ways. Technology is a great way to learn with more senses. Colors N Shapes - I love the progression in this game. It shows you what you need to find as well as verbally giving directions. The first level has 3 of the same shape but different colors. You need to choose ...

Get To Know LDS Apostles

General Conference for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints occurs the first Sunday in April and October. I have created a general conference packet to get to know the First Presidency and LDS Apostles to keep hands busy but hopefully not mouths as we watch. In this packet you will learn three facts about each person and will have a corresponding activity or food item to reinforce that fact. In my home we watch conference on our television. I like my kids to listen but it ...

Color Sight Word Worksheets for Kids

We have been practicing how to spell color words with our color songs. The next step is to use manipulatives as part of our active learning. A common toy or object combined with printables for kids transforms learning into fun. Use these Color Sight Word Worksheets for Kids and pipe cleaners to reinforce how to spell color words with touch. Studies have shown that we learn better when we are using our senses. The information you are learning is processed with more connections and ...

Kids Songs: Color Songs

My two oldest kids had the same Kindergarten teacher whom we absolutely loved. I remembered they learned how to spell their color words by singing fun color songs. I'm wondering if I teach Haley how to spell her colors through fun kids songs if that will help her word retrieval issues. Whenever I use movement or one of her senses to learn or relearn something it helps when she needs to retrieve that word. This confirms what I have been learning about the brain. The more ways I can help her ...

5 Color Apps for Android – Learning Apps for Active Learning

I have been trying to teach my Haley her colors for almost 2 years. I started teaching her at the same age I started teaching my 3 older girls. For some reason, possibly her brain tumor, possibly not, she has not been able to learn them. I know some kids don't learn them until Kindergarten and perhaps I should just leave her be and hope that she will get it later but that isn't me. I've since learned that she does know some of her colors but she is unable to recall the words when I ...

Free Ipad Apps for Active Learning – Numbers/Counting Ipad

I shared some Free Android Apps for Numbers and Counting a couple weeks ago. Now I am sharing some free ipad apps for active learning on the Ipad for Numbers and Counting. When comparing the Android and Ipad apps available I quickly learned that the Ipad has a lot more better quality apps. We have been testing a huge selection of apps for a while now. If there are too many ads we delete them. If my 4 year old cannot understand how to use the app we delete it. After much testing we have ...

Learning Apps for Active Learning: Numbers/Counting Android

It has been about 16 months since Haley went in for brain surgery to have her tumor removed. She was 2 1/2 when we discovered she had a major problem which we later learned was cancer. She was a smart girl who was talking at 18 months. Post surgery we have realized her brain works a little differently. We have learned to patiently wait while her brain heals. That hasn't been the easiest! She is now 4 and in preschool. You could look at Haley, have a short conversation with her and then ...

Our Flag – 4th of July

Flag Day is on June 14th so I wanted to read a book with my son about flags and the importance of Our Flag.  I found a Little Golden Book by Carl Memling titled Our Flag.  This is a great book that gives history on the changes of the flags of the USA.  I find this book a great one for kids of all different ages.  The pictures are bright and colorful.  The text is simple and easy to follow.  The explanations on each page are brief, but are still able to tell a lot about the history of ...

The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart

When I was pregnant with our daughter, I had a friend give me the book The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart.  Right away I was caught up in the illustrations by Christine Davenier.  When I got home that night I had to read this book.  It is a longer story which would be great for the older ages.  My daughter, who is now 1, will not sit through the entire reading of this book.  Along with the length, the language is a little harder to understand for the younger ages.  Gerry, "The ...

Llama Llama and the Bully Goat

We have all heard a lot about bullying and the effects it has on children and adults.  I wanted to find a book that would reinforce what bullying is, and what role we play in bullying.  That's when I found the book Llama Llama and the Bully Goat.  I loved the illustrations in this book along with the great lesson it gives.  It is about a llama and his day at school with a bully who is a goat.  It talks about what to do when someone is bullying you or a friend, and how the teacher ...

The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with Chores

I grew up reading many of the Berenstain Bears books.  I fell in love with them as a kid and wanted to share these with my children as well.  Over the next few months I will be reviewing 1-2, each month, of the Berenstain Bears books.  I hope that your kids enjoy these books as much as mine did.  I know my son really enjoyed the book this week which is titled The Berenstain Bears and the Trouble with Chores. How do you get chores completed at your house?  How do you incorporate this ...

Mother's Day is just around the corner and I have a great book for you to read with your kids. The Berenstain Bears Forget Their Manners

We are excited to be sharing the book The Berenstain Bears Forget Their Manners.  I don't know about you, but sometimes I feel I shouldn't need to continue to remind my child when to say "thank you" and "please".  No, I don't need to remind him every time, but frequently.  And, what about manners at the table, or at a friends house?  This is a great book to read with your children.  We all need a review of what good manners are, and why they are so important. After we read the book ...
