Almond French Toast

Since we love French Toast so much we decided to try another new variation! Almond French Toast has a few more steps then other versions so this recipe is for the intermediate Little Chef. The first step is to toast the almonds. In a small saucepan add the almonds and stir them frequently for 5 to 10 minutes. Ours took 10 minutes on medium heat. The second step is to compile the dipping mixture. We like to start with the eggs only in a shallow dish. This way if my Little Chefs get any ...

Aileen’s Punch

Do you ever have a party and want something new to drink? We wanted to find a recipe we haven't tried before. Aileen's Punch was rated highly on Allrecipes so we decided to see how we liked it. This recipe is easy to prepare. Any Little Chef can execute this recipe with the help of opening the cans. Everything should be chilled and thawed in the refrigerator. We like our beverages very cold so this is a crucial step. Make sure you have a very large punch bowl and combine all the ingredients. ...

Spaghetti Gelato

Spaghetti Gelato is so fun to make with Little Chefs! This idea came from Cafe Bella Rue. You can make this for a fun dessert or would even be great for April Fool's day! Actually, my Little Chefs LOVE planning Halloween parties. This would be a spooky dessert if we named it bloody brains! It would even be great for April Fool's Day. The key to this dessert is to freeze the rice strainer and the serving plate. I had to explain this to my Little Chefs. If the gelato or ice cream is cold ...

Mango and Kiwi Sauces

Whenever we watch cooking shows and they make desserts they usually have beautiful sauces to compliment the main part. It doesn't look that hard to make so we decided to give it a try for the first time ever! We found these mango and kiwi sauce recipes within a dessert recipe. We always need to have a recipe when we try something for the first time. I'm trying to teach my Little Chefs they need to have a base knowledge before they start creating their own recipes. To our surprise both ...

Restaurant Review: Cafe Bella Rue

Cafe Bella Rue has a great first impression. They are located west of Salt Lake City, Utah in Daybreak. Daybreak has a shopping center, SoDa Row, and Cafe Bella Rue is right there in the heart of it all. Within a minute after walking into a restaurant you can tell by the atmosphere what you should expect. Being greeted by a couple employees (one who told me a little about the menu and in fact apologized for part of the special menu white board being a little rubbed off by some small patrons) ...

Simple Candied Orange Peel

It's funny how the title of this recipe has 'simple' in the name. I suppose it really is simple, but it is very time consuming! We have seen candied orange peel on a variety of cooking shows and decided to try it. We went to the store and grabbed a couple oranges along with the usual; milk, eggs and yogurt. The first step is to cut the oranges in a way that you can take the middle out with very minimal damage to the outside peel. We just cut the oranges into segments then ...

Preserving the Harvest: Blanching and Freezing Green Beans

We have discovered it is fun to not only learn to cook, but to also learn where foods come from and how to preserve them for later. We have dehydrated apricots, made jam and froze apricots for a crisp. We were given some fresh green beans from Grandpa’s garden. Of course we had some for dinner last night, but we still had A LOT left. I thought it would be great to teach my Little Chefs how to blanch and freeze green beans. Because of the boiling water involved adult supervision/help is an ...

Egg in the Hole Grilled Cheese Sandwich

When school was first out and the Little Chefs are very excited for the "best summer ever." At our first summer lunch at home Little Chef A said, "Can we NOT have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at all this summer?" In the April 2012 Food Network Magazine there was a tear out with 50 different grilled cheese recipes. We read through them all and chose a few we thought sounded good. The first one we wanted to try was Egg in a Hole. We found this recipe to be quick. It is very ...

Preserving the Harvest: Apricot Jam

Fantastic Thursday is still up. Link up what you have been up to and see what others have been doing. Remember the apricots we got from my parents tree? We dehydrated some, made apricot crisp with some and we even froze some apricots to make apricot crisp later. We STILL had more so Little Chef A was amazingly helpful and made apricot jam with me. She stayed with me from beginning to end! She was VERY proud of herself for this accomplishment! She is the one who takes a PB&J; sandwich to ...

Preserving the Harvest: Dehydrating Apricots

My parents have an apricot tree that was ready for harvesting. On Sunday we stopped by and picked some apricots for preserving. The Little Chefs were eager to pick because they were able to climb the tree! Later they were eager to help because that meant they were able to sneak A LOT of tastes! I showed them how to safely half the apricot, after it was washed, to take the pit out. The next step was to cut each half into thirds. It seems each time I dehydrate I cut the fruit in a ...

Crazy Cajun Butter Grilled Corn on the Cob

We LOVE corn on the cob. When we are grilling it is super easy to throw a few ears of corn on for a side dish. This time we decided to do something a little different. We have seen on cooking shows different flavored butters you can put on the corn before grilling. We found a recipe for Crazy Cajun Butter Grilled Corn on the Cob and decided to give it a try. All the ingredients were familiar to us and already in our pantry. That is always a major factor for choosing a recipe! The ...

Spicy Moroccan Glazed Chicken

I knew from the recipe selection this was going to be either a hit or a miss. The spices were in our pantry as my sister can attest. She was just here helping me and wondered about some of the unusual spices we had including some for this recipe...that is unusual to her! Little Chef C was ready to begin with her apron on anxious to do her job. She first measured out the lime juice then the yogurt. It's a good thing we had the plain yogurt from the Creamy Cucumbers to use up as we are not fans ...

Creamy Cucumbers

When I grill I either like to have sides that can be put on the grill at the same time, or are prepared earlier in the day. This recipe is a Creamy Cucumber Salad that NEEDS to be made at least 4 hours earlier so it can marinade. It is so simple to make Little Chef D was a little bored making it herself! The first step is to mince the onion and slice cucumber. Half your cucumber lengthwise and then cut it thinly across. Little Chef D did not want to do this task today so I helped her out. She ...

Dessert Quesadillas

My Little Chefs have been desperately wanting to make their own recipes! We came up with the idea to make Dessert Quesadillas. Somehow it turned into we are doing Chopped at our home and the secret ingredient is tortillas. They wanted me to get out ingredients and then call them into the kitchen to amaze them with their choices. Little Chef C even wanted me to put them under a box! They were each overly excited to make their own and taste everyone's recipes. We decided to grill the ...

Garlic-Balsamic Asparagus

Over the past couple of years when we ate at our friends house in the summer time they always grilled asparagus. Last summer we tried it on the grill ourselves and liked it. This time the Little Chefs could help in the preparation but not in the grilling.  We knew we would like Garlic-Balsamic Asparagus because we LOVE balsamic vinegar! The first step is to snap the ends off the asparagus. This is easy for Little Chefs to do. If you bend the last few inches it will naturally snap.  The ...

Rhapsody for Red Meat

We are starting a grilling series the entire month of July. Summer is a great time to grill. I thought my Little Chefs could learn a few skills in preparing the foods for the grill without actually using the grill. They are not tall enough to safely grill. However at most grilling parties I have been to one person prepares the food and another actually does the grilling. My Little Chefs can learn the first part now and the second part in a few years. Rhapsody for Red Meat is a marinade ...

Potato Slabs

I found this Potato Slabs recipe a couple years ago. We have loved it ever since our first bites! If you like potato skins you will like this as well. What makes this a great recipe for kids is it requires much less effort! The first thing to do is crisp up the bacon. I like to cut the bacon into small pieces then it is easier to cook and you do not need to handle the bacon afterward. Your Little Chefs might need help with the slicing. When the bacon is done transfer it to a paper towel ...

Ginger Snaps

This easy recipe has always been a hit wherever we have taken these.  The spices are so strong which is why in my opinion makes them great! Over the last few months we have had the great pleasure of bringing these Ginger Snaps to a friend. Our friend has a rare form of cancer and has been amazingly strong while going through very aggressive treatments.  Apparently going through all these treatments has left our friend not being able to taste anything.  It took one bite for our friend to ...
