Baked Cinnamon Sugar Churros

Baked Cinnamon Sugar Churros looked like a yummy recipe according to the Little Chefs! I LOVED this recipe because it took about 15 minutes to make! Oh how I wish a lot more recipes could be this quick!
We have never worked with puff pastry before but I did know to look for it next to the frozen desserts at the grocery store. It comes as a 2 pack. This recipe only uses one sheet so we have enough for a quick dessert or afternoon snack when we have lots of friends over. Each Little Chef took turns cutting the dough. That was a very simple task for them. Too bad simple doesn’t mean easy because it isn’t easy to cut a straight line!

Little Chef C measured out the sugar and placed it on a plate. Little Chef A measured out the cinnamon. I did NOT tell them where to put the sugar and cinnamon on the plate. Now that I think about it I did not tell them the goal of each. Perhaps that is why they each poured their ingredient on the farthest side of the plate as possible following the food cannot touch rule.

Now it was time to mix the two together. That was going to be a little tricky since they are far away from each other on the plate. Eventually, after taking turns mixing they did it. Afterward, they were having fun with their sugar and cinnamon ‘zen garden’ drawing different designs.

There was only a few minutes left for the puff pastry to cook. The Little Chefs were amazed at how puffy the dough was now. They watched until it turned just the perfect shade of golden brown to take out. Little Chef A said, “it smells like toaster strudels” as they were pulled out of the oven.

They each rolled the puff pastry in butter and then in cinnamon and sugar. Their techniques varied from shaking and rolling to patting and pouring to squeezing until they were misshapen. That really did not matter because they had a wonderful time even though they were getting their hands dirty.

This is a GREAT recipe for Little Chefs! The steps are easy and the recipe is quick to keep their attention. While these do not taste like Churros because of the puff pastry, Baked Cinnamon Sugar Churros are a good substitute at home. It’s a good thing we only used one sheet because the Little Chefs would have eaten twice as much just as easily!
