We are excited to bring you a couple new holiday easy crafts this week. My son is out of school until he starts Kindergarten in Sepetember, so doing crafts is always a joy for us. It is a great time to sit down with him and spend some one on one time. Having a little sister now, he doesn’t get as much time with me as he used to.
I remember doing paper weave crafts when I was younger, and thought this would be fun do with with my son. This is something we haven’t done before, so he was excited to see what we were going to do. To stay with our July Holiday theme, I decided to keep our colors red, white, and blue and create a 4th of July Woven Placemat.
Supplies you will need include scissors, glue, a piece of red, white and blue construction paper. To make it even more durable for a placemat craft foam is a great alternative.
Step 1: Fold your blue paper in half length wise.
Step 2: Take your scissors and cut slits every 1″, starting at the folded side, almost to the top.
Step 3: Cut strips of red and white paper 1″ wide, length wise so they will fit across the blue paper.
Step 4: Open up the blue paper and lay it out on a table or desk.
Step 5: Start weaving your red and white strips of paper. Choose one color and weave over then under until you get to the end. Choose the opposite color and begin under then over until to get to the end. As you do each strip you will want to secure the end with a dot of glue. Or wait until the end so you can adjust if needed.
Step 6: Display for all to see. In the picture we wove two placemats then put them side by side and laminated them.
