Stitched Easter Egg

Where did the idea of a Stitched Easter Egg come from? I was taught how to cross stitch by my Mom when I was young. I started with small easy projects and progressed to large ballet themed pictures with MANY colors and details.

I thought my Little Chefs were ready to begin learning this skill. Easter Eggs are so fun to decorate because there are no limitations. We decided to learn how to do a few simple stitches on egg shaped plastic canvas’.

Ingredients

• plastic canvas
• plastic canvas needles
• scissors
• yarn – variety of colors all your choice

Directions

1. Cut out egg shapes from the plastic canvas. You choose the size you would like to make.
2. Cut a piece of yarn to about 18″. Anything longer was too hard for the Little Chefs to keep under control. Thread a needle making sure to knot one end. I found it easier to have 4 different colors and 4 needles. I make sure everything was available for them to grab and go. Crafting with kids is all about efficiency!
   
3. Choose the stitch you want to create. I made an egg with the 3 different stitches and variations. They were able to point to the one they wanted to create, then I showed them how to execute that stitch. Once Little Chef A learned how to do her first stitch she was able to replicate the other stitches just by looking at my example. Little Chef C needed more instruction.  Little Chef D needed my undivided attention.
   
4. It is best to stitch one row at a time. Little Chefs are not able to design the entire egg before starting. One row at a time is perfect. They will need help knotting the end of each row before cutting the yarn.
   
5. When the entire egg is completed let them sit back and enjoy their success making a Stitched Easter Egg while learning a few stitches!
