Red, White and Blue DIY Necklace

If you step foot in almost any store in June you will see an abundance of red, white, and blue decorations, clothes and accessories. We love necklaces for any occasion in our home. In fact it doesn’t seem you can ever have enough can you? We decided to combine our love of necklaces and the patriotic colors to make our own festive red, white and blue DIY necklace.

tablecloths

We bought 3 rectangular tablecloths, one in each color, for $3 total. I layered all 3 colors together without unraveling all the layers then cut 5″ strips.

Keeping all the layers folded cut both long sides in toward the middle. Basically you are creating double sided fringe. To make it easier I put a binder clip on each side to keep all three layers together. All the Little Chefs had to get in on the action. Little Chef H just wanted to snip and rip, but she felt big like her sisters so it was worth it! The size or width of the cuts is not specific which makes this a great craft for Little Chefs.

The Little Chefs were then able to unravel all the layers. You will have three long strips each 5″ wide. Line all three up and tie them together at the top. Now is when it is very helpful to have a partner. One person holds the knot while the other person braids the three “strands”. The braid should be fairly loose. (The tighter the braid the less visible the fringe.)

Be careful not to pull too hard because the tablecloths do rip easily. When you get to the end tie both ends together and put on your red, white and blue DIY necklace! If you want to make shorter necklaces, bracelets or hair accessories just make the length shorter to the size you desire.

I am a mom to Five Little Chefs who love to cook and create anything with their hands. Watching over 10 additional hands keeps me busy but is so much fun! We laugh and cry everyday, but then want to do it again the next day. That is how we know we are enjoying life!
